FOSA 2018 - Designer Finalists

The University Museum at Texas Southern University combined art and fashion June 9, 2018 at the Hilton Americas Hotel during its biennial For The Sake of Art Gala and Runway show. Iconic artist Radcliffe Baliey, art scholar scholar David Driskell and accomplished couple Grant and Tamia Hill were honored as part of the evening’s festivities.

The For The Sake of Art Wearable Art Competition, gives artists and designers the opportunity to create wearable art designs for a juried competition. This year’s offerings were based on some of Oliver’s most memorable paintings.

Shirlette Thompson won 1st place as well as the People'e Choice award in the competition with her "catch a fire" dress made of matches. Designer Kyndall Bollmeyer took 2nd place with her lighted stripes of fabric ensemble while Nghi Nguyen came in third place with a striking butterfly evening gown. The award for Most Creative Design was given to 15 year old Charlie Miller and designer Andrea Giralt Brun won the newly established Mattie Kirkland Whitaker Award. The other 5 finalists include Ashton Brown, Jade Cooper, Chasity Sereal, Charlayne Lockett and Moyosore Lamilisa.

FSOA 2018 Leadership

For the Sake of Art 2018 is being chaired by Houston philanthropists and champions for non profit organizations Mary Auzenne, Gaynelle Drexler and Evelyn Washington. Honorary Chairs for 2018 are Tamia and Grant Hill. Houston designer Toni Whitaker serves as competition advisor and the competition coordinator is fashion and marketing expert Andrea Bonner.
